Due Wednesday, September 9- signed criteria sheet for full credit, after which you will receive 50 homework points. If you have not been in class yet, make sure you receive yours.
Wednesday, September 9- vocabulary quiz, as per handout last Wednesday. Again, this will consist of 20 responses, the first 10 being matching, the second 10 choosing the vocabulary word that best suits the context of the sentence.
In class today: handing back last Thursday's "Cultural Iceberg" paragraphs.
If you took yours home to complete, I need it today; otherwise it is late. If you were not here last Thursday, you should complete the paragraph at home and bring it tomorrow. There is a class handout. This will take 30 minutes maximum. It is your base line writing assignment, and hence is very important. As well, if you received a less than optimum grade, please complete the assignment and turn it in again.
Notes on "Cultural Iceberg" paragraphs
There were many, many excellent responses. Most people received a grade of 75/ 85 /95, which corresponds to ü --,
ü , or ü +. How were these graded? In order to receive full credit, you must have had a clear thesis statement and supporting evidence, as well as no language convention errors.
What most folks struggled with was an analysis or concluding sentence. No one was penalized for missing this.
Things to consider: avoid I believe or I think in formal writing. Expunge it from your writing this year! Incorporate the impersonal one, rather than using you.
For example, when one observes an another culture, it should be with an open mind.
Avoid contractions in formal writing. I'd ( I would have); he can't (he cannot); they're (they are)
In class today: power point review as practice for tomorrow's vocabulary quiz.
