Name__________________________________ Prologue questions

For full credit, your responses must be complete, well-written, grammatically correct sentences.

1.       What does the name Starkfield suggest about the setting?

The name Starkfield suggests a community that is bare and empty, perhaps isolated as a town. This also suggests a sense of disconnection among the residents.

2.       How does Herman Gow corroborate this later? Find his words on page 6.

Gow corroborates this idea later when he tells the unknown narrator that Ethan's "been in Starkfield too many winters. Most of the smart ones get away" (6). This is repeated several times in the Prologue and supports the idea in Naturalism of how the environment impacts one's life.

3.       Give two words that portray the stereotype of an engineer.

mathematical                                   logical                            rational
reasonable                                        analytical                      observant
curious                                            problem solver               unemotional

4.       How is the narrator, whose name we never learn, atypical*? (Think about how he views Ethan). (*not representative of a type, group, or class)

The narrator may be viewed as atypical of the stereotype of an engineer by his initial emotional response when seeing Ethan: "he was the ruin of a man" (6). As well, the speaker shows that he is more than just curious when he "sense(s) that there were perceptible gaps between...facts" (7), thus demonstrating an emotional connection to the tale.

5.       What could be the significance of the missing “L” structure on the farm?

Since the "L" used in New England farm homes signifies family growth over time, that Ethan's has rotted away is symbolic of the rot and stagnation of his family, who have lived for generations in Starkfield.

6.       What places to Herman Gow and Mrs. Ned Hale Occupy in the story?

a.      Gow: The stagecoach driver Herman Gow gives the narrator a general overview of what happened to Ethan. Gow lets him know that Ethan is the caretaker, despite his horrid injuries. Gow also adds a philosophical note, when he says: "Most of the smart ones get away" (6).

b.     Hale: Mrs. Ned Hale was a contemporary of Ethan's and was around when the "smash-up" occurred. She is a widow now, who lives with her mother. The narrator is staying with them, and so Mrs. Hale gives him more circuitous information about what happened.

Both of these characters help move the tale into the flash back to 1887, the middle part of the novel, when the truth is exposed.

Dialectical journal for the Prologue 7 responses required    Due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, March 8 Dialectic means “the art or practice of arriving at the truth by using conversation involving question and answer.” The “dialectic” was the method Socrates used to teach his students how to be actively engaged in the struggle to obtain meaning from an unfamiliar and challenging work. A dialectical journal is a written conversation with yourself about a piece of literature that encourages the habit of reflective questioning. You will use a double-entry form to examine details of a passage and synthesize your understanding of the text. Note that if you receive extended time, you are required to complete only 5 examples.

There is to be NO collaboration with other students. This will count as a writing grade, for which you will be assessed on content, fluency, word choice and language conventions.
PROCEDURE: As you read, choose passages that stand out to you and record them in the left-hand column the chart. These must at a minimum be a full sentence and from different pages in the assigned section. Select text that resonates with you. (ALWAYS include page numbers).
In the right column, write your response to the text (ideas/insights, questions, reflections, and comments on each passage)
Label your responses using the following codes:

 (Q) Question – ask about something in the passage that is unclear
 (C) Connect – make a connection to your life, the world, or another text
 (P) Predict – anticipate what will occur based on what’s in the passage
(CL) Clarify – answer earlier questions or confirm/disaffirm a prediction
(R) Reflect – think deeply about what the passage means in a broad sense –not just to the characters in the story/author of the article. What conclusions can you draw about the world, about human nature, or just the way things work?
(E) Evaluate - make a judgment about what the author is trying to say.
