Communication is the foundation to our
humanity. The English Language Arts
curriculum strives to make
all students successful by the practice of
those reading, writing and oral skills that promote proficiency. Our
goal is their practical application to
whatever further educational path the student chooses. This is accomplished
through the undertaking of close, attentive
reading in complex works of literature and non-fiction. Students
will apply critical thinking and analytical
skills through oral and written work. These will be augmented by
vocabulary and grammar work. Upon the
successful completion of the course, the student will receive
one graduation credit. In addition, English III students will be
taking the English Language Arts Common Core
Exam in June 2015.
Needed Classroom Materials:

Class Policies.
By now you are familiar with the school-wide changes.
1. There are to be no cell phones or other electronic devices. This is not a discussion point. If the phone comes out, an administrator will be called. The phone will be collected, and you will be able to retrieve it, only after having served a Saturday detention. (Don't go there.)
2. Class starts when the bell rings. If you come in after, then you are late and must serve an after school detention with me if this is repeated 3 times. There is a tardy sign-in book. Write your name legibly. These are held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. You have one week to fulfill this obligation, at which point you will be assigned a Saturday detention.
3. No food or beverages.
4. No hats...male or female.
5. Disruptive behavior: this includes talking out of turn, taking walkabouts and disrespecting anyone or anything in the classroom. You will be politely asked to defer three times, at which point you will serve an after school detention and a call home. If this is a repeatable offence, an administrator will take the appropriate action.
6 Make sure you are prepared with paper and a writing utensil.
7 Absences: you are responsible for the material
when you are absent. Per district policy, you have 10 days to make up work from a LEGALLY (that means someone called or there is a note on file)
excused absence. If you do not have a legal absence, you may make up work for 50 points until the end of the marking period. Remember that there are only four this year, so be especially mindful that you must complete your work. If you are out, please make sure to check the blog. Do not ask me what you missed, rather request the specific material. Please note that school field trips, play or music
performances and college visits are anticipated outings.
If an assignment is due on that day, plan accordingly. You will
not receive an extension.
8. Note that I am available before school and periods 1 and 2 for support, as well as after school on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Students who attend an after school class will receive bonus credit.
